Anti Aging Food and Nutrition

Food is the original medicine. That's why food and nutrition play such an important part in role in living a long, healthy life.

But how do you sort through the bewildering array information about how to eat to get the most benefit?

For example, Dean Ornish advocates a diet high in complex carbohydrates with only moderate amounts of very low fat proteins. Robert Atkins (and others) advocate a diet focused primarily on proteins and fats, with only low-carb vegetables. And, of course you can find a wide range of other recommended diets to choose from.

It's always been interesting to me that every single dietary approach gathers a group of ardent followers, people who feel that their favorite dietary approach has turned their health around. That must mean something, don't you think? The question of the hour is, what exactly does it mean?

How Do You Decide?

You may have heard the phrase, "One man's meat is another man's poison." This saying holds the key to understanding how you can find exactly the right way to eat that will support you living a long, healthy life.

Researchers for over 80 years have recognized that each of us is as different on the inside as we are on the outside. Some of the original studies on this were published in 1956 in the book, "Biochemical Individuality" by Roger Williams. There he describes how completely different people are both structurally and biochemically.

This means is that contrary to general belief, no food, herb or drug in the world affects all people the same way.

Take a moment to think about what that means.

Ultimately, how a food or other substance you take into your body affects you depends on your initial starting point defined by lifestyle, genetics and other factors.

Practical Steps to Take

First, start paying more attention to the signals your body gives you related to food and nutrition. The best way to accomplish this is by noting how you feel 1 to 2 hours after eating.

Especially, consider your level of hunger or cravings you have at that time. Also notice your overall energy level - if you're too hyper or your energy's dragging, it's a signal. Last, but not least, notice how well you are thinking and your state of emotional balance and resilience. Fuzzy-headedness, depression or anxiety might be clues about how your foods are affecting you.
